The faculty board for the Master’s in Architecture and Health
Caterina Frisone (Architecture), Fabio Peron (Engineering), Valeria Tatano (Architectural Technology), Margherita Vanore (Urban Design)
Caterina Frisone
is the founder and director of the Master in Architecture and Health, a course she designed after five years of experience (2017-2022) in the healthcare sector in the UK. With a PhD in Architecture of Care from Oxford Brookes University, she verified her research hypotheses by visiting hospitals and healthcare facilities across the country and living for four months in three different Maggie’s Centres (cancer care centres), where she tested the therapeutic role that high-quality architecture has on people. She has taught architectural design courses in Italy, the United States, and the United Kingdom, with a focus on sensory, perceptual, atmospheric, and emotional experience. Exploring this theme and investigating the interdisciplinarity between architecture and neuroscience, her recent book, “The Therapeutic Power of Maggie’s Centre” (Routledge, 2024), aims to inspire architects, doctors, students, and all those researching the relationship between architecture and health.
Fabio Peron
is a full professor of Environmental Technical Physics at Iuav University. He graduated with honours in 1990 and received his PhD in Chemical Engineering from the University of Padua in 1995. A Visiting Researcher at the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory in 1998, he has since taught courses in Environmental Control Techniques, Building Physics, Acoustics, and Lighting at Iuav University, where he is the scientific director of the Technological and Environmental Design Department of the Iuav Doctoral School and Deputy Director of the Environmental Technical Physics Laboratory (EN 17025). His main fields of activity are energetics, fluid dynamics, heat and mass transport, air quality, microenvironmental control for conservation, and light and sound in relation to the built environment. A member of several associations in the sector, he has participated in several national and international research projects and is the author of over 300 scientific articles.
Valeria Tatano
architect, PhD, full professor of Architectural Technology at the Department of Design Cultures of the Iuav University of Venice, where she teaches technological subjects and ‘Technologies of building recovery and inclusive design’ at the School of Specialisation in Architectural Heritage and of the Landscape. She deals with inclusive design and innovative technologies in the relationship between architecture and technology, in particular with regards to the themes of conscious design. She is the scientific director of ArTec, the Archive of techniques and materials for architecture and industrial design of the IUAV Laboratory System and delegate of the Rector for policies and actions relating to inclusion, disability and sustainability.
Margherita Vanore
architect and PhD, she is full professor of Architectural and Urban Design at the Universita; Iuav di Venezia, where she teaches in the year 3 and master degree courses in Architecture and for the SSIBAP School of Specialisation in Architectural Heritage and Landscape. She carries out research on projects for the contemporary city, landscape and historical-cultural heritage. From 2017 to 2020 she was the scientific director of the Iuav research unit for the Project of Significant National Interest PRIN 2015 The city as care and the care of the city. In the Department of Excellence of Project Culture, for the IR.IDE Research Infrastructure, she has coordinated the PRIDE_Pro Research in Integral Design Environment laboratory since 2018.
